Millennium Dual Athlon 4800+ PC

Millennium Dual Athlon 4800+ PC
My new pc was built by Millennium, one of their standard dual athlon PCs. It has a Dual Athlon X2 4800+ processor with 1MB of cache, , 2 GB of double data rate RAM PC3200 400MHz, an ASUS A8V socket 939 motherboard. 2 SATA hard drives and one IDE drive totalling 400 GB of storage, a DVD-RW/CD-RW and a floppy drive. Millennium used to use the A8V deluxe board, but it has been discontinued, so I have an A8V only, this means one of the PCI slots is taken up with a firewire card. It's got 6 USB 2 ports, 4 back and 2 front. Three FW400, two back and one front.

Inside it is a UAD-1 card, an ATI Radeon 9250 SE dual head video card (passive cooled so no fans to make noise), along with the PCI soundcard my RME HDSP 9652. The system is cooled by two 120mm quiet case fans and a Scythe Ninja cooler on the chip, with another 120mm fan attached thereto. The power supply is a Tagan 480W Easy Connect ultra quiet. The system is all inside an Antec P180 tower case, which has soundproofed panels and a front door to limit sound even more. The configuration of the board is such that IRQs are hard to come by. All but one slot have shared IRQs, so you need to be a little careful about which slot takes which card, to protect against possibilities of glitching, although I don't think there is much of an issue with that these days. The board has onboard gigabit ethernet and also onboard sound, both of which are disabled now, because I don't connect this to the internet and the RME deals with the sound. There is no PCI-e on this board either, expansion slots are the older mix of AGP and PCI.

The only things I had problems with were extension cables. I had my mouse and keyboard, plus the two monitors on extensions and it didn't work too well with this new box. The screen images degraded considerably, so I had to reposition things a bit. The mouse wouldn't work at all, the keyboard was okay. Now that it's up and going I am going to see how much it can actually do, I think it is pretty powerful, but we'll see...
